Wade Miley

(7-10)

5.23 (1.40/.281)

90K / 39BB, 20HR

QS: 9

</b>

Since being traded to Baltimore, Miley has not done well and has pitched to a 7.04 (1.76/.328) with no wins and two losses. He has never pitched well at Camden Yards, but has solid numbers against the Astros despite four guys hitting him pretty well.

Collin McHugh

(7-10)

4.70 (1.48/.297)

133K / 38BB, 18HR

QS: 10

McHugh had been pitching pretty well after a rough April. From the middle of June to the end of July, he was going along good, but he ended July with the worst start of the season allowing eight runs in only 1.2 IP against the Tigers. He allowed 10 hits in the outing. Since then, McHugh has been OK in August, but not as good as before that start good for a 4.42 ERA so far in August. He allowed no homers in the start against the Tigers, but has allowed four in August and the Astros have lost the last four games he has started. McHugh allowed three runs on eight hits in 5.1 IP against the Orioles back in May during their three game sweep. He struck out 10 and walked one.

Musgrove didn't look good at all in this game. He didn't seem to have command of anything and was throwing too many fastballs early on. He then tried to switch to breaking stuff, but didn't have command of that either and the Orioles made him pay. Now that he's been stomped, his welcome to the majors is complete. Hoyt comes in and he has no control either leaving pitches inside middle just like Musgrove and the Astros get pounded in the opener as mistake pitch after mistake pitch gets hit out. That's what the Orioles do best; punish bad pitching and there was plenty of it to go around in this one. Gausman allowed five runs (2HR) in 6.2 innings which isn't good either and on any other night, that's enough to lose the game. He gets away with the bad start because Musgrove and Hoyt were worse. The Astros didn't appear to be broken by this loss and kept fighting, so maybe they will try a little harder in game two. It's practically a must win at this point. The pitching totally failed them here. If you can't locate against this team, it's going to be a long night and Gregerson was really the only guy who was able to do that well with three strikeouts in the inning he worked and only one hit.

Miley has not pitched well since coming to Baltimore and McHugh has struggled recently after pitching well for almost two months. Maybe he should have kept the beard? Still, I like McHugh more than Miley here until he proves that he can pitch better at Camden Yards. McHugh is going to have to be good after seeing Musgrove and Hoyt missing spots and getting taken deep.

Toronto had an off day today and Boston lost, so the Orioles are tied for second again 1.5 back of Toronto who will begin a three game series with the Indians. Detroit, of course, beat Boston. The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning and promptly coughed it back up in the bottom of the eighth. Tazawa was charged with all three runs with the game winning run being walked in by Ziegler. He also walked in the game tying run in game one of the Orioles series, but Boston came back to win that one. The Red Sox got runners on second and third against K-Rod, but Betts hit a line drive to Kinsler that almost got into center field to get the lead back. The Tigers stay 3.5 back of the WC and continue to hang around within striking distance. The Tigers will face the Orioles for three in Detroit starting on September 9th. As for the M's, they lost to the Angels 6-4. Both teams scored in the first inning with the Angels taking the 2-1 lead later increased to 3-1, but a Cruz home run in the next half inning brought it back to 3-2. Aoki doubled to lead off the eighth, but couldn't score and the Angels put up three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The M's got two runs in the ninth on a two run blast from Zunino, but that was the extent of it and they fall to three back in the WC.

Miley is bad, and McHugh isn't much better. Against a hopefully red-hot Orioles offense, McHugh has his work cut out for him and then some. Basically it looks to be a slugfest even more so than last night. Both teams will score at least 6, I predict.

    • The Diamondbacks absolutely destroy LHP (.857 OPS, tops in ML) and the Orioles are going to start back-to-back lefties in this series. Don't get me wrong, I would  not change the rotation now with things going well, but I'm going to be very impressed if they get another good start from Means after what Irvin just accomplished. The Orioles are in a much better spot with regard to starter diversity than they were in 2023 and I think that's a very good thing for OPACY.
    • I think the bar is pretty low.  Don’t be as stingy as John Angelos.   Nobody’s expecting him to be Steve Cohen.
    • It's gracious of you to admit it's a matter of personal bias. In just his first of two seasons with the Orioles, Belle provided a lot more offense (37 homers, 117 RBIs, 143 OPS+)  than several of the players you did list combined in their entire Orioles careers, e.g. Clark + Carter + Thome--all of whom, moreover, were much further along "a downward trajectory from age." Belle's first season with the Orioles was basically equivalent to the popular and listed Nelson Cruz's single season (40 HR, 108 RBI, 137 OPS+). I also disagree that Angelos and the Orioles' front office should have known that Belle's days as a feared slugger were over: he had played 143, 158, 161, and 163 games leading into his age 32-years-old 1999 season with the O's. The HR totals during those seasons with the Indians and White Sox were 50, 48, 30, and 49. He played in 161 and 143 games with the Orioles in 1999 and 2000. The degenerative hip condition that ended his career was not diagnosed until the spring of 2021, a half year after his second season with the Orioles. The sight of Belle in spring training nonetheless trying his hardest to run down the first base line on essentially one leg left no doubt in my mind that, as he had expressed to the media, he was absolutely dedicated to honoring the generous contract Angelos had bestowed. He had to be ordered to give up trying to play.
    • Then Who goes to the Pen?
    • Kimbrel was good, no doubt, But I'm with Irvin. Who could have possibly seen the last 4 starts coming? tonight was more of the same, Hope he keeps it up.
    • I think it was the 1997 team that had Mussina, Erickson, Key...   Could be this staff is the best since the 80s but we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not ready to say it's close to better than the dynasty staffs of the 60s through the early 80s.  Those teams didn't just have good individual years but many years strung together.  That's what the O's haven't had in so long and need to get back to.
